I personally think that the place is brilliant, and the flavours of all the dishes are 10 out of 10. The staff are on to everything - friendly and knowledgable, could do with major improvement on coffee though. A tasty fair trade could compliment the ambiance. otherwise spot on I say.
I've been to Okra many times in the last few years having lived in various houses "just around the corner" from Okra. Came here today with the Koala for a mid-week lunch. Plenty of tables out the back were free in the closed off outdoor area. We started with flat whites which are always good. I ordered the fish sandwich and the Koala ordered the sirloin strips. Both came out before I'd finished my coffee and were yummy as. My fish was crumbed with a tasty herb and breadcrumb crust came with salsa and salad. The bread was very crisp and garlicky. Not the kind of sandwich you eat with your hands. Koala was very happy with his cast iron pan filled with tasty meat. This came out sizzling and smelled wonderful. The sirloin strips were very tender from the bits I managed to entice from the Koala. I noticed that Okra no longer have jambalaya on their menu, but have paella instead. Might have to try that next time. The paella is the most expensive thing on the menu at $17.50. Not bad for all that seafood though. Bill came to $38 for 2 mains and 2 coffees. This is the first time I've been in during the weekday and they were only half full. Weekends are packed at Okra so if you're going in a group, best to book a table. Though they did seem to have a lot of staff on, they were friendly and service was quick so I guess having lots of staff works. Please note that Okra is one of those places people bring their canine buddies to.
Went last Sunday, first time I've eaten here - heard many good things about it. They had good vegetarian options. I ordered the vege breakfast - best I've had in a long time. Coffees were all too cold - but we mentioned it (very shyly! And after he asked!) to our waiter and he replaced them all with fantastically hot ones! Very friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Think it may be our new local.
We went to Okra for midweek brunch. We were heading to our 'local' further down the road but decided to stop at Okra after the recommendation of another friend. I had the vege big breakfast which was a breakfast and a half. Poached eggs, toast, mushrooms and hash browns - I had more than enough on my plate really. It was also delicious, cooked well and arrived quickly. My friend had the seafood pasta and I was told it had loads of seafood in it. The whole lot was finished off too, so I'm pretty sure it tasted good. I ordered a soy flat white and that was the thing that let my experience down. The coffee tasted a bit burnt. The service was good though and I liked seeing the waiter interact with other people in the cafe. Okra has a really nice friendly vibe and I'd happily go again.
Great poached eggs, good coffees & very friendly staff.
Coffee, coffee, coffee - their coffee is intense! Beautiful stuff, exactly where you need to be when you want a real coffee. The breakfast menu is also quite something - a little pricey for Sandringham Rd, but far better than many places up the road (Kingsland) definitely worth it. The vegetarian was also very, very happy with their breakfast meal - especially since they got to swap around various ingredients to their needs with little fuss. The desserts are ok, but mostly we like to grab a coffee before work because it's so conveniently on the way. Again, Coffee!
Ok i love Okra. Am delighted that a more than decent cafe have moved up the road with great staff, really yummy eggs and an outdoor courtyard. Have gone there often with a young child and they are most accomodating with her slight menu changes and running around. Awesome atmosphere, the best place for an any time of the day brunch. Great breakfast menu - would like to see a few changes to the lunch menu to entice me away from eggs. All in all best cafe in auckland city.
Have been wanting to go here since it opened, and have seen it get busier and busier. Now I know why! Visited for brunch and found it fantastic!Reasonably priced, nice atmosphere (although only a few tables), tasty food and the best service I've ever had at brunch in Akld!
